US Coast Guard history began in the 1790's when Alexander Hamilton's fleet of 10 small Revenue Cutters challenged French privateers preying on American merchant vessels.  During this French Naval War and the War of 1812 these Cutters proved their worth against experienced European warships.
There are currently 34 Streamers proudly displayed on the Coast Guard flag representing heroic actions in naval encounters from 1798 to the present.

All Battle Streamers are made to military specifications, 2 3/4" width x 4' length.

Notes:  Coast Guard name used for the Vietnamese Gallantry Cross Streamer is "RVN Armed Forces Meritorious Unit Citation, Gallantry Cross with Palm."  Coast Guard name used for the Vietnamese Civil Actions Streamer is "RVN Meritorious Unit Citation, Civil Actions Medal First Class Color with Palm."
